Solution for System32 Folder Opening At Windows Statrup Issue

advertisement

I recently downloaded the Release candidate for Windows 7 and installed it in my new VAIO and from that day onwards, whenever I login to my laptop I was greeted with the System32 folder. I checked the startup folder, checkted the msconfig.ini and all possible places where it could have been misconfigured. Also checked was the Windows Registry where the start up items are configured. This was quite a bit disturbing, when you are greeted with the most important folder in a Windows System on login.

Normally when you try to open up Windows or Windows/System32 folder, in Vista and Windows 7, the UAC asks for confirmation or some sort of authorization. this is absurd as I was not able to get this bug out of my system after 4 long days of search.

I tried the solution given at the Microsoft Support site which says

“When you log on to Microsoft Windows, a Microsoft Windows Explorer window may open that displays the contents of the System32 folder. This behavior also occurs if there is a String value that contains only a single quote character (“”) as the Value data in the following Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

They say the cause for this might be a null, incomplete, or damaged entry exists in the registry. The solution was also given on that page, but that was not working for me. As per the Microsoft Support site, the solution was to edit the Registry keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

verify that all the values in these keys do not contain any incorrect, incomplete, or null entries (such as “”).

I checked all the entries inside these keys and was not able to find an incomplete entry. Then it says below that, in More Information section, an entry for ActMovie.exe /Check had been confirmed as the cause for this issue. But nothing, nothing was working for me.One solution for this, as I found in an online forum is to delete the dektop.ini file from the windows startup folder, which also, unfortunately was not working for me. So id ecided to do some trial and error methods by myself and at the end I was SUCCESSFUL in getting rid of that disturbing bug of system32 folder opening at System startup.

Here are the steps that saved me. Please remember to take a backup of your registry before doing this.

  1. Go to Windows Start and open Registry Editor.
  2. Go to the Registry Key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  3. There might be several entries inside this key. Double click on the first entry, copy the value.
  4. Click on the Start button, paste the copied value in the Rearch / Run box at the bottom and hit enter.
  5. If System32 folder is not opening, go ahead and repeat steps 3 and 4 for each registry value.
  6. If System32 folder is opened for any Registry key in Step 4, go ahead and remove that registry key.
  7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for the Registry Key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    also.

  8. Restart the System

While doing this, for one entry, when I hit pasted the value and hit enter, the System32 folder came up. BINGO!!! He was the culprit. I removed the registry entry and now there is no System32 folder opening up at startup. Hope this would be useful to you guys.
